Question by kemaramodel: on a Honda CX500 motorcycle, are you able to drive it on 1cyl?
I’m thinking of buying a CX500, but its only running on 1 cyl. right now… is ti drivable? i wouldn’t be driving it long distances or anything, or all the time. Just here and there like 1-2x a week. If i buy it, I’ll be buying it for $ 300. Is it worth it?
Its a 1979 btw.
yea, obviously i don’t have the experience/knowledge or i wouldn’t ask… but isn’t this what the “yahoo answers” are for?
I’m not looking to use it everyday or for long distances… just every once and a while to run like 2 miles each time i’d ride.
About how much would it cost to get the carbs cleaned n stuff?

Why don’t you consider having it repaired, it could be something as simple as replacing a bad spark plug ?
However, assuming that it is something more serious, say a plugged carb, or even a burnt valve, if you keep running it that way you will cause more serious damage. Not to mention that it will be very underpowered, ill idling, and probably prone to overheating. As a mechanic I have taken on numerous repair projects, but, if you lack the tools and experience you should probably avoid this one and save your money for something that at least runs correctly.

NO. It is a violation of traffic law to impead traffic and you would be impeading traffic and a danger to other drivers. Get a truck and haul it home.

Yes but only in an emergency, not for regular use.
Its a 250cc single with one cylinder not running and severely overweight as a 250. Also, the fuel consumption will be terrible ( which is one of the reasons for having a bike) and, its going to shake like crazy
It probably needs carb cleaning and general service ( CX is a bike that usually gets mistreated, if its been stored for a while it ‘s probably just carb clean)
For that price its worth getting it sorted so its usable and not dangerous.
You obviously don’t have much motorcycle experience or you wouldn’t have asked the question.

If you are seriously considering buying this bike, I would look well beyond the purchase price. If it is only running on one cylinder there is at least one thing wrong with it. Like the other people mentioned it may be something simple, or you may spend a lot of money on a bike that has a very marginal resale value at best.
The CX-500 was a styling disaster in most rider’s opinion, including mine. The bike was not particularly well balanced and it just doesn’t look right.
You will also find older bikes tend to develop other problems like fork seals, and the shaft drive seals, etc. You may find this bargain is going to bankrupt you before you get it “just right” and end up with a bike after all that worth just what you paid for it when it ran on one cylinder.

I got a good laugh at the styling disaster comment, That is why they call it the Plastic Maggot. I have owned a 1978 Honda CX500 for 12 years and I ride it a lot. $ 300.00 is well worth it. I think you should buy it and fix it. I do not recommend riding it on one cylinder. Chances are that if it is running on one cylinder that it may be the CDI which has gone bad. They can be found on eBay for about $ 185.00. Definitely replace the spark plugs first with NGK D8EA gapped between .024 -.028 and see if that solves your problem. I would tend to steer away from the idea that it is the carbs, But that is from my experience, Usually if a CX is running the carbs are fine. The Honda CX500 is a fantastic motorcycle with plenty of power. It will never let you down. For $ 300.00 send it my way, I wouldn’t mind another one!
